چکیده

We propose a scheme to resolve handwriting from background printing. The scheme detects the indentations made by the pen in the paper. Photometric stereo is used to recover the surface; a matched /lter and classi/er are used to detect the stroke indentation. We assess the e0ect of uniform and textured backgrounds on the recovery of the stroke and test the scheme on practical examples. The technique was found to work well with script written with a ballpoint pen and could e0ectively suppress even dark and strongly textured backgrounds. We conclude that this is a useful complement to existing techniques for background removal and is especially useful when there is no template available. ? 2003 Pattern Recognition Society. 3D Reconstruction Using Shape from Photometric Stereo and Contours

In this work, we further discuss an approach to 3D shape recovery by combining photometric stereo and shape from contours methods. Surfaces recovered by photometric stereo are aligned, adjusted and merged according to a preliminary 3D model obtained by shape from contours. Comparisons are conducted to evaluate the performances of different methods. It has been found that the proposed combinatio...

A Photometric Stereo Using Re-Projected Images for Active Stereo Vision System

In optical 3D shape measurement, stereo vision with structured light can measure 3D scan data with high accuracy and is used in many applications, but fine surface detail is difficult to obtain. On the other hand, photometric stereo can capture surface details but has disadvantages, in that its 3D data accuracy drops and it requires multiple light sources. When the two measurement methods are c...

A Photometric Stereo Approach to Face Recognition by Roger Woodman

Face recognition has received much interest in the last decade, as the need for reliable personal identification security has become ever more critical. At present for face recognition to be a viable personal identification method an accurate low cost solution is required. Many two-dimensional (2D) face recognition systems have been implemented, which demonstrate the potential of using face rec...

Photometric Stereo for 3D Face Reconstruction Using Non Linear Illumination Models

Face recognition in presence of illumination changes, variant pose and different facial expressions is a challenging problem. In this paper, a method for 3D face reconstruction using photometric stereo and without knowing the illumination directions and facial expression is proposed in order to achieve improvement in face recognition. A dimensionality reduction method was introduced to represen...

Comparative Study of 3D Face Acquisition Techniques

Today, communication devices are evolving towards friendly–user interactivity while permanently eyeing towards 3D display technologies. As such, 3D face generation, modelling and animation techniques are in the frontline to design realistic animated 3D talking faces. Simple, reliable and economic, 2D image processing techniques have been widely used to reconstruct 3D faces. This paper focuses o...
